I recently heard of this new 'diet fad' going around called 'Paleo' which in short terms, means eating like a cave man. You focus on proteins and veggies and don't eat any grain products, dairy or processed foods. The article I read about it said that compared to the amount of time humans have been on the earth, its only been a minuscule amount of time that we have been eating grains and dairy and now our bodies are fighting back which is why more and more people are becoming gluten and dairy intolerant. Okay, I can dig that, but as I am not dairy or gluten intolerant, there is no way I am giving up my pasta and cheese entirely (and live without tortillas!? YEAH RIGHT!!). But I am willing to cut back a bit.
I don't fully subscribe to the whole 'paleo' thing because although I do believe that you should eat as natural as possible, I don't believe that you should completely cut out things that you enjoy. I think joy is arguably one of the most important things when it comes to life changes. For me, if I don't feel happy in what I am doing, the chances that I will continue doing it are very slim.
I would like to improve my overall health and well being, and I am also curious about the spiritual side of food. What first brought this idea to my attention is the 3rd insight from James Redfield's Celestine Prophecy. In the book, people meditate with the plants that they grow themselves in order to give the plants more energy. The result is that the plants grown and the fruits and veggies produced are healthier and more nutritionally dense compared to plants that hadn't been meditated with. Now I don't know if this works in real life, I would like to believe it does and in any case I like the idea of giving energy to my food, because like everything in the universe, food is essentially energy; yummy, yummy energy that we put in our bodies to...gain energy. So if I want that energy to be the best it can be, it makes sense to project as much positive energy as I can to the food I am going to consume.
I want to explore different things around food. Not just recipes, but also the environmental, economical, social, and personal impacts that food has. So I hope you guys enjoy this series and I look forward to taking this journey with you.
